My First New York Fashion Week: Part I

My First New York Fashion Week: Part I

Considering I’m writing a blog about fashion, it should come as no surprise that one of my favorite times of year is Fashion Week. Growing up, Fashion Week was a prize awarded to the finalists of Project Runway. Now, working in New York City and more attuned to the fashion industry, Fashion Week is so much more. Designers have been showcasing their Fall 2020 collections in New York since December of 2019. I’m not going to comment on every single piece in every single collection because that would take way too long. Rather, as Fashion Week progresses, every Friday until all the Fashion Weeks are over, I’m going to feature designers and collections I really like and, if possible, hopefully explain how a garment could work on someone like me.

Red Valentino

I want to start by saying that I love menswear-inspired womenswear, capes, and the school-girl classic look (think Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl). Red Valentino’s collection had all three. The collection was inspired by a young Brooke Shields with Vogue quoting Pierpaolo Piccioli saying “With this collection I wanted to telegraph a message of freedom, spontaneity, and unconventionality”...and it certainly does. I’m completely obsessed with this one coat that, if the sleeves and hem were a little bit shorter, I would wear with anything, perhaps even as a coat dress.

Christian Siriano

Leslie Jones was certainly not the only one LIVING for this collection (If you don’t know what I’m talking about then I suggest you RUN don’t walk to Christian Siriano’s instagram). I made it known in my fashion inspiration post that I have been in love with Christian Sirano and his designs since his Project Runway days. What I loved about his show was that he had models of all sizes strutting the runway, not surprising as he said a few years back, “It’s different now, but it will be normal one day to see every size on a runway and in the front row and at fashion week and events.” The struggle was real to pick my favorite look but I think the winner is this feminine take on a tuxedo. All I would need would be a simple hem of the pants. And, of course, one cannot obsess enough over the finale look worn by Coco Rocha.

Tom Ford

Feather earrings are back! Yes, I will admit I got caught up in the feather craze of the early 2010s. I had bought many pairs of feather earrings and would spend hours with my friend putting multiple feather extensions in our hair (her mom was a stylist and had a whole bin full of feathers). This collection was gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. I loved the mix of hard and soft, the pops of color…this collection felt very bold to me. I love, love love the first look (look 1). To me, this look is flawless from head-to-toe from the gold-dipped grey feather earrings to the sweatshirt style top with the cut-off sleeves, the houndstooth-printed skirt, all the way down to the grey socks with the silver heels. If altered right, I would wear this look in a heartbeat.
