NYFW: Spring 2021 Part II

It’s time for part II of my recap of the spring 2021 ready-to-wear collection. Are you ready? Let’s go.

Alberta Ferreti

Light and airy were the first words that came to mind when I saw this collection. With a mostly neutral color palette and simple silhouettes, this collection was all about the details from perfectly placed cut-outs to intricate seaming to delicate embroidery.

One of my favorite looks is actually the last look to walk down the runway: semi-sheer flowing mint green maxi dress with a halter neck and darker green accents. First off, the color is gorgeous- the perfect spring green. Second, the empire waist makes this dress flattering on nearly every body type. I mean, this dress practically floats down the runway. To wear this dress all I would need is a simple hem and gladiator sandals.

The second look I loved from this collection is this modern take on overalls- a cream and yellow jumpsuit with a bustier top, cut-outs and a drop waist. Due to the proportions of the jumpsuit it would be a hard look to pull off on a little person but one I feel could work (I would gladly volunteer as tribute to try on).

The third look I had to write about is this sky blue midi dress with a triangle cut out. This dress is simply perfect. If I could get away with wearing it as a maxi, I wouldn’t hem it at all.

Max Mara

As I scrolled through this collection the words “I WANT” kept echoing in my head. Narrowing it down to my favorite looks was HARD as a compelling argument could be made for all of them.

When I saw this look I stopped dead in my tracks- a blue and white poplin stripe off-the-shoulder cape sleeved top with high-waisted navy pinstripe pants. I love the twist on the classic button-down and, as I’ve made known before, am OBSESSED with a cape sleeve. I would wear this look in an instant as it can easily transition from day to night, the alterations to make this outfit work would be hard (it’s all about proportions) but 100% worth it.

The second look I want in my closet is this all white ensemble featuring a bomber jacket with cape sleeves, flowing white tunic and pants. The jacket is everything, I have never seen a bomber jacket with a cape sleeve before and now I wish all my bomber jackets had a cape sleeve.

The third look I have to talk about is another monochromatic take on the classic pant suit- a tan ensemble featuring a blazer with balloon sleeves. While the sleeves would require more than a simple hem, I see no reason why this outfit wouldn’t work on someone with shorter arms. Yes, the pants would have to be hemmed too.

Bibhu Mohapatra

I discovered designer Bibhu Mohapatra during last season’s fashion week and instantly became obsessed with his designs. This season’s collection is bold and bright with daring, new silhouettes I have never seen before.

This gorgeous yellow, open sleeve dress is picture perfect. The embellishments at the waist and the double slits make this seemingly simple dress extra special. The danger with altering it is maintaining the proportions. After hemming the dress, you would have to make the slits higher, but not too high. Could it work? Yes.

The second look I have to talk about is this fully beaded ivory dress with a cape back. This dress is a dream. You can tell how much precision and dedication went into each stitch and the result is perfection. Due to the intricate, delicate beading I don’t think this dress could be altered for a little person, an unfortunate reality of the current state of the fashion industry- some things just can’t work. That being said, I love this dress, I want this dress.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for next week with my final recap of the spring 2021 collections.
