NYFW: Spring 2021 Part I

Fashion week has started and I am very excited to bring back this series. Like last time, I will be commenting on my favorite looks from my favorite collections and, if possible, theorize how some of these amazing looks would work on a little person's body.

Are you ready? Let’s go.

Thakoon

I first learned of the designer Thakoon while watching the documentary The September Issue. Back then he was an up-and-coming designer who had just been selected by Anna Wintour to design a collection for The Gap. Since then, he has designed for Rachel Bilson, Sarah Jessica Parker and former First Lady Michelle Obama. His spring 2021 collection was stunningly simple with classic shirt dresses, jumpsuits and separates that could go with anything. One of my favorite looks from this collection is this blue button-down shirt with a banded waist and a mid-length black skirt. It is simple and classic but elevated with the defined waist. Both the skirt and shirt could easily work on a little person's body. In fact, I don’t think the shirt would have to be hemmed at all. Another look that I fell in love with is this black cold-shoulder top with cargo pants. The look screams Kim Possible, one of my idols during the early 2000’s, in the best way possible. The puffed sleeves transform a seemingly simple outfit into one that would turn heads on the street. Of course, the pants would have to be hemmed but they would be a staple in any woman’s closet...including mine.

Marchesa

I love Marchesa, it is on my fashion bucket list to wear a Marchesa dress at least once (it will probably never happen but a girl can dream). This collection is beautiful, every dress is a wearable work of art. To pick a favorite was a near-impossible task but I narrowed it down to three. The first is this stunning rose-colored gown with ruffles that go from from the neck all the way down to the slit. I love how the dress falls, the simplicity of the design and the boldness of the color. My second favorite is a royal blue lace dress with a handkerchief hem. The lace detailing is gorgeous and it is a dress that could be hemmed for a little person.

My third favorite look from this collection (okay, it may be my absolute favorite) is this gorgeous not-so navy blue gown with knotting at the bust, two cut-outs, a high slit that is fully beaded to look like the night sky. This dress is EVERYTHING! It is the grown-up version of the opera dress Anya wears (my childhood dream dress) in Anastasia and it is absolutely perfect.

Tom Ford

The first word that came to mind when I saw this collection is FUN. The clothes in this collection are bold and daring and I’m obsessed. One of my favorite looks is this floral and leopard print skirt with a zebra long-sleeved top with a mesh-insert. It is an outfit that is guaranteed to turn heads. Would I wear it? Of course. Could I? Definitely. The skirt could easily be hemmed without losing too much of the prints. Another look I la-la-love is this all white ensemble. I love the semi-sheerness of the top and the crispness of the white shorts. And...because they are shorts, they wouldn’t have to be hemmed. It is the perfect look for spring.

Badgley Mischka

This collection is a fashion fantasy. I love the mixture of structured and flowy pieces. The first look took my breath away with it’s lacy white button-down paired with a floral and paisley printed skirt. What ties the look together is the striped blue and green belt. This look is fanciful and free and, because the skirt is printed from top to bottom, could be hemmed without losing what makes the look so wonderful. The second look I fell in love with is another all white ensemble with flowy, pleated, wide-legged pants paired with a sparkling trench coat. I love the balance between hard and soft. Individually, I think these pieces could work on a little person’s body (as always, the pants would have to be hemmed). Together...it’s a little tricky because the proportions would have to be right. And yes, I’m also equally obsessed with the other suit in this collection. Finally, I can’t talk about this collection without talking about this amazing navy blue coat dress. It is perfectly tailored and the gold embellishments make this dress extra special.
